The Nationwide Teamwork Challenge
The challenge is to complete a 5 mile or 'the Last Eleven miles' challenge This format will be used across the whole country, and will be based on a team of 3 or more completing a sledge pull of 5 miles, or the last eleven miles, with each person completing at least one mile. For younger students each person need only complete a smaller distance. We will create a league table of all teams that take part. There are very few rules or guidelines, but these are set out below. 1. Teams
The ideal team size is 5 replicating Scott's polar party. Teams may be male, female and mixed, and within the age groups described below. A school can enter as many teams as wanted for only one entry fee, and can also make it an internal competition. 2. Where to do your sledge pull ? The sledges run best on smooth surfaces like athletics tracks, cycle paths, tow paths, wide pavements and smooth grass of playing fields. Big sandy beaches are perfect. Ideally you will have a circuit of 1 mile. Quiet roads are also suitable, but less so because of the obvious risks from traffic and because they will require more safety supervision. 3. Age categories For purposes of the national challenge league table we have divided the Challenge into age categories. The age of the team is determined by the average age of its members. 16 to 19 (at least 1 mile per person) 13 to 15 (at least 1 mile per person) 11 to 13 (0.5 or 1 mile per person) 7 to 11 (0.5 miles per person) 4. Sledge Pull Challenge Distances and times The 5 mile challenge should be achievable in 40 mins to 1 hour, hence in one PE session. The aim is to to post a time for pulling one sledge over the chosen distance, with members of the team taking turns to pull the sledge. Each team member will complete a minimum share of the distance of between 0.5 to 1 miles. Only one team member need be running with the sledge at any one time. 5. Measurement and recording your results We will ask you to record the times taken for completing your sledge pull, and the total number of miles all teams from your school or group complete in the sledge pull event. We will post these (if you wish) in a league table of results. The results of each team you enter can be sent to us using the 'record your times' link and page. |
