The Teamwork Challenge - How it works
Challenge Themes and suggestions There are a number of themes which you can use to complete the sledge pull challenge. The aim is for it to be a team event, but there is no reason why a great many students could not take part, each making a small contribution. We have come up with a few symbolic themes and ways to catch peoples imagination and interest. 5 miles for 5 students 5 people replicates Scott's famous Polar Party. 1 mile each in relay, and timed to enter into our national league table. This could be easily achieved in a PE lesson or a sports session The Last Eleven Miles Captain Scott and his colleagues died 11 nautical miles short of their supplies depot. Complete their journey to safety. The Last 200 miles Captain Scott and his colleagues died 200 miles from completing their journey. Combine the efforts of all your students to bring them all safely home. 100 miles for 100 years A simple way to mark the centenary To the pole - 883 miles and if you have got there then you will want to come back... To the pole and back - 1766 miles Take on these challenges as a whole school event, perhaps even run it exactly 100 years after Scott's quest for the pole, starting on 1st November 2011. Scott reached the pole on 17th January 1911, and made those famous final diary entries on 29th March 1912. However the model is completely flexible so you can run your challenge as you wish. The Pull is intended to be a team task, so individuals need only complete small achievable (but hopefully appropriately challenging) sections of whatever distance is undertaken. Of course it could vary from person to person. A Sledge Pull may easily be fitted in to a PE or sports session. A National Competition These formats will form the basis of a National Teamwork Challenge Competition, where a group from any school in the country can be measured against any other of comparable age, forming a league table. The categories can be seen by clicking the 'league table' button on the right hand side of this page. Sledges; delivery and timing of your event We have 50 sledges strategically placed all over the country. When you sign up we will deliver two or more sledges to you. Automatically you will have them for two weeks, but they can be hired for longer or even bought. This could give you time to spread the activity throughout the whole school. Ideally you will do your sledge pulls quickly so that we can pass the sledges onto another school in your area. Fundraising
Fundraising is also an objective of the sledge pull teamwork challenge. Our main aim is to give your school the opportunity to raise funds for your own adventure and exploration activities. This could be an expedition, a Duke of Edinburgh Trip, equipment. However the Sledge Pull may also be used, at your discretion, to raise funds for other charities nominated by the School, and you may decide how to divide these funds. |
