The Polar Museum, Scott Polar Research Institute
The Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) is part of Cambridge University. SPRI’s conservation and scientific purpose is imbued with the history and romance of the original expedition.
- SPRI was founded in 1920 as a result of Scott's dying plea "For God's sake look
after our people". The residue of the fund set up for the families was used to establish the Institute. - Scott also wrote for his son as he lay dying in the Antarctic saying, "make the boy interested in natural history if you can. It is better than games..." - His son, Peter Scott, was a conservation colossus. David Bellamy described him as "the father of conservation". He founded the organisation that became the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) and was the first Chairman of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 1961. - SPRI today is a leading world authority on the polar regions and has tremendous outreach and educational resource programmes for schools. The sledge pull event will not only raise funds for schools own adventure activities but it will also support The Polar Museum outreach and educational programmes of the Scott Polar Research Institute.
A word from Heather Lane, Librarian & Keeper of Collections: "The Institute has fantastic resources: the world’s foremost polar library and archive, a world data centre for glaciology and outstanding museum collections concerning the whole era of British exploration in the Arctic and the Antarctic. "Our collections range from works of art and photographs to documents and artefacts, and cover everything from evidence of early encounters with Inuit peoples to the latest scientific instruments. "The Polar Museum is a great place to visit if you want to learn more about the history of exploration and science."
